A. Basic Qualifications

  1. 01Overseas Koreans: An Applicant must have completed primary, secondary and university education outside Korea.
  2. 02International Students Type Ⅰ
    • An applicant and their both parents must be citizens of countries other than Korea.
    • An applicant must have completed primary, secondary and university education equivalent to Korea.
  3. 03International Students Type Ⅱ: An applicant must have completed primary, Secondary and university education outside Korea equivalent to Korea.

Note : An applicant who holds dual nationality is not eligible to apply as a foreign student but can apply through general admission.

B. Language Qualification

An applicant must satisfy the language requirement.

  1. 01Korean : TOPIK Level 3 or higher
    • This Korean language requirement is waived for an applicant who finishes her/his* Master’s program at GNU and applies for a higher degree course at GNU(from a undergraduate program to a master's program or Combined Master's and Ph.D. program Ⅰ, from a master's program to a Ph.D. program or Combined Master's and Ph.D. program Ⅱ), or applies for a department which offers English Track.

      The applicant should stay in Korea at the time of application(who can extend or change her/his to a D2 visa)

  2. 02English (Only applicable to the departments which offer English Track)
    • TOEFL(PBT 530, CBT 197, iBT 71), IELTS 5.5, CEFR B2, TEPS 600(New TEPS 327) or higher results

      Note : This English language requirement is waived for an applicant from the following country where English is used as the native or an official language (Ref. Department of Foreign Affairs in Korea: www.mofat.go.kr)

Graduation Requirement

International students must satisfy the Korean language requirement (TOPIK Level 4 or higher, or a successful completion of the Korean course approved by GNU Graduate School) in order to submit a thesis for graduation.

Program Qualifications

Master’s


    An applicant who applies for a master’s program should hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (or those who are expected to earn a degree by February 2026).

Ph.D.


  • An applicant who applies for a doctoral program must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent (or those who are expected to earn a degree by February 2026).

Combined Master’s and Ph.D. (Type Ⅰ, Ⅱ)


  1. 01《Type Ⅰ》An applicant who holds a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  2. 02《Type Ⅱ》A student enrolled in a Master’s program at GNU should meet all the criteria below.
    • An applicant, in their third semester, who has completed or is expected to complete 15 credits can only apply.
    • An applicant who already completed four semesters at the time of application cannot apply.
    • An applicant is only allowed to apply for the same major as their master’s program.
